Components:

  1. Cite at least six sources, including at least five from outside of the syllabus. At least two of these should be peerreviewedarticles or scholarly books. (I recommend using google scholar or JSTOR.) The rest can be any combination of news stories, opinion pieces, scholarly sources, websites, videos, and/or original research. As an example of original research, you might want to interview someone about your issue or conduct a brief survey or observation. If you have any questions about sources, or want help with original research, please let me know.

The purpose of these outside sources is to gather information about your issue, and to find arguments on both (or all) sides. There are no specific requirements about the time frame (ie, it’s not necessary to stick to breaking news), but the point is to find out what is happening recently with respect to your issue and what people are saying about it.

  1. Explain two or more positions on the issue. Make sure to represent each position fairly and honestly to the best of your ability. What claims does each side make? What reasons do they give for their positions? What assumptions do they make and what evidence do they offer?
  2. Provide evidence for or against at least two of the claims made. (For example, if one side claims that vouchers improve student achievement while the other claims they do not, find some research that addresses this question.)

4)Choose one opinion piece for close analysis.

  • What is the argument?
  • What empirical claims does the author make, and what evidence does s/he offer?
  • Does the writer represent the other side fairly, as far as you can tell? If not, explain any misrepresentations (or “straw” arguments).
  • Does s/he make claims that are vague, unsubstantiated, not falsifiable, or simply untrue?
  • Identify other strategies: exaggeration, omission, red herrings, unwarranted predictions, ad hominem attacks, “apple pie” arguments? (Apple pie arguments are statements that no one would disagree with, like “All children can learn.” It’s nice, but it’s not very meaningful or useful.)
  • Based on your analysis, how persuasive is the argument?

  1. Offer your own perspective on the issue. You can agree with one side or the other, or you can take a compromise position of some sort. If you feel that you don’t have enough information to take a position, explain what else you would need to know. In any case, explain your position briefly.

Other requirements:

Citations within the text should follow this format: When paraphrasing, cite using author’s name and date in parentheses. You can do this in the middle or at the end of the sentence. For example: According to Lareau (2003), middleclass children are usually raised using concerted cultivation. Or: Members of marginalized racial and ethnic groups often perform worse on intelligence tests than those of higher status (Hout and Fischer 1996). [Notice that the period goes after the parentheses.]
